Cyperus polystachyos is a native sedge that forms compact clumps with narrow, grass-like foliage and distinctive umbrella-shaped flower clusters. This moisture-loving perennial thrives in wet areas and produces small, brown seed heads from summer through early fall. It works well in rain gardens, pond edges, or other consistently moist locations.

In an HOA neighborhood

Bunchy Flat Sedge takes more care to keep looking intentional in a front yard. Maintenance level: moderate. Consider it for backyard or mid-zone beds rather than the street edge.

Works well in: backyard only.

  • Sedge appearance may look like unmanaged grass to HOAs
  • Requires consistently wet conditions that may appear poorly maintained
  • Brown seed heads can look untidy in formal settings

Wildlife value

The flowers attract bees and beetles during the long blooming season from June through September. The seeds provide food for birds and the clumping structure offers shelter for small wildlife.

Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
