Umbrella magnolia is a distinctive medium-sized tree with large, paddle-shaped leaves arranged in whorls that create an umbrella-like canopy. It produces fragrant white flowers in late spring followed by showy red seed clusters in fall. This native tree thrives in partially shaded areas with consistent moisture.

In an HOA neighborhood

Umbrella Magnolia is an HOA-friendly choice. Maintenance level: moderate. Tidiness: 3 out of 5.

Works well in: front yard, mid zone, backyard only.

  • Large leaves can create significant leaf litter in fall
  • Needs adequate space to accommodate mature size

Wildlife value

The fragrant flowers attract beetles, which are the primary pollinators for magnolias. Birds and small mammals feed on the bright red seeds that appear in late summer and fall.

Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
