Groundselbush is a large native shrub that produces clusters of small white flowers in late summer and fall. It grows quite large, reaching 6-14 feet tall and wide, making it suitable for spacious areas where it can develop its natural form.

In an HOA neighborhood

Groundselbush takes more care to keep looking intentional in a front yard. Maintenance level: low. Consider it for backyard or mid-zone beds rather than the street edge.

Works well in: backyard only.

  • Very large mature size may appear overgrown
  • Common name includes 'weed' which creates negative perception
  • Can look scraggly in winter when dormant

Wildlife value

This shrub is excellent for late-season pollinators, attracting bees, butterflies, and beetles when few other plants are blooming. It serves as an important nectar source during fall migration periods.

Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
