Slender plantain is a compact annual wildflower with narrow leaves and small, inconspicuous flower spikes. It grows in a low rosette form and thrives in partial sun with minimal water needs. The plant blooms from late spring through summer with tiny flowers arranged on slender stalks.

In an HOA neighborhood

Slender Plantain takes more care to keep looking intentional in a front yard. Maintenance level: low. Consider it for backyard or mid-zone beds rather than the street edge.

Works well in: backyard only.

  • Appears weedy and unkempt to most homeowners
  • Very low growth habit looks like lawn weeds
  • Flower spikes are thin and unremarkable

Wildlife value

This native plant attracts bees and beetles with its modest but reliable blooms throughout the growing season. Its seeds also provide food for small birds and wildlife.

Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
