Spring quillwort is a small aquatic or semi-aquatic fern that forms tiny clumps of narrow, grass-like fronds. This unusual native plant thrives in consistently wet conditions and shallow water areas. It maintains its small, tufted appearance year-round as an evergreen perennial.

In an HOA neighborhood

Spring Quillwort takes more care to keep looking intentional in a front yard. Maintenance level: high. Consider it for backyard or mid-zone beds rather than the street edge.

Works well in: backyard only.

  • Requires standing water or bog conditions unsuitable for typical landscaping
  • Very small size makes it nearly invisible in standard plantings
  • Specialized aquatic habitat needs conflict with conventional yard expectations

Wildlife value

As a specialized aquatic plant, spring quillwort provides habitat for small aquatic invertebrates and contributes to wetland ecosystem health, though it doesn't support typical garden pollinators.

Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
