Swamp-privet is a large deciduous shrub that can reach up to 20 feet tall and wide with a somewhat irregular growth habit. It produces small clusters of flowers in spring before the leaves emerge and requires consistent moisture to thrive. This native shrub works well as a screening plant or in naturalized areas.

In an HOA neighborhood

Swamp-privet takes more care to keep looking intentional in a front yard. Maintenance level: moderate. Consider it for backyard or mid-zone beds rather than the street edge.

Works well in: backyard only.

  • Extremely large mature size inappropriate for most residential settings
  • Irregular growth habit appears unmanicured
  • High water requirements suggest wetland plant unsuitable for typical landscapes

Wildlife value

The spring blooms attract bees and beetles for pollination. The dense branching structure provides nesting sites for birds and the berries feed wildlife in fall.

Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
