Lechea intermedia is a small native perennial that forms low, dense mats with tiny narrow leaves and clusters of small greenish flowers in summer. This drought-tolerant plant thrives in sandy soils and full sun conditions. It goes dormant in winter, leaving behind dried stems that provide winter interest.

In an HOA neighborhood

Large-Pod Pinweed takes more care to keep looking intentional in a front yard. Maintenance level: low. Consider it for backyard or mid-zone beds rather than the street edge.

Works well in: backyard only.

  • Very small inconspicuous flowers may appear weedy
  • Can look sparse or scraggly compared to traditional landscaping
  • May be mistaken for a weed by neighbors unfamiliar with native plants

Wildlife value

The small flowers attract native bees and beetles during the summer blooming period. Its low-growing habit provides shelter for small ground-dwelling insects.

Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
