This delicate native orchid produces two large, round basal leaves and a tall spike of small greenish-white flowers in summer. It prefers cool, moist woodland conditions and can be challenging to establish, requiring specific soil fungi to thrive.

In an HOA neighborhood

Lesser Roundleaved Orchid takes more care to keep looking intentional in a front yard. Maintenance level: high. Consider it for backyard or mid-zone beds rather than the street edge.

Works well in: backyard only.

  • Very informal wild appearance
  • Can be mistaken for weeds when not blooming
  • Uncommon plant that many won't recognize as intentional

Wildlife value

The fragrant flowers attract night-flying moths and some native bees during summer blooming season.

Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
