Shrubs are the hardest group to replace by eye, because oleander, sago palm, and nandina all read as tidy evergreen structure. These natives give you the same year-round shape without the emergency vet visit.

Toxic trees and what to plant instead

Most toxic trees on this list are fruit trees in the Prunus group (cherry, plum, peach, apricot) where the pits and wilted leaves are the hazard, plus chinaberry and black walnut. These natives give you spring bloom or fall color instead.

Toxic perennials and what to plant instead

Foxglove, lily of the valley, hosta, and daylily are the common offenders here. Note that daylilies (Hemerocallis) and true lilies (Lilium) are both dangerous, and true lilies are a particular emergency for cats.

Toxic vines and what to plant instead

English ivy is the one to know: eleven of its trade names appear on the ASPCA list, all the same plant. Add bittersweet, climbing nightshade, and gloriosa lily.

Toxic bulbs and what to plant instead

Nearly every classic spring bulb is on this list: tulip, daffodil, hyacinth, amaryllis, autumn crocus, and calla lily. The bulb itself is usually the most concentrated part, which is a problem with dogs that dig.

Worth saying plainly: every Allium (onion, garlic, chives, leek) is toxic to dogs and cats, including the native ones. A native label is not a safety signal on its own.

Periwinkle (Vinca) and shamrock plant (Oxalis) are the two that spread through pet yards most often.

Toxic annuals and bedding plants

Geranium (Pelargonium), coleus, begonia, and the castor bean plant are the bedding-flat regulars on this list. Castor bean is the serious one: it contains ricin.

Kitchen herbs that are toxic to pets

This group surprises people. Garlic, onion, chives, and leek (all Allium) are toxic to both dogs and cats. So are oregano, marjoram, tarragon, parsley, mint, lavender, bay laurel, and chamomile. A raised bed does more good here than a plant swap.

The practical fix for an herb garden is height and separation, not substitution: raise the bed, or fence the kitchen garden, and keep Allium plantings out of any yard a dog has unsupervised access to. If you do want to swap, rosemary and basil are both absent from the ASPCA toxic list. Neither is a native plant, so they sit outside the rest of our recommendations, but they answer the question people actually ask here.

Toxic houseplants

This is the largest single group on the list, and a native yard plant is not an honest swap for a pothos on a shelf. Philodendron, dracaena, dieffenbachia, monstera, peace lily, snake plant, jade, and aloe are all here.

These are indoor plants, so the fix is placement rather than replacement: hang them, shelve them above jumping height, or move them to a room the pets do not use. If you want something at floor level, the ASPCA lists Boston fern, spider plant, African violet, and parlor palm as non-toxic to both dogs and cats. For a patio container, any of the native perennials above will do the same job outdoors.

Toxic weeds and volunteers

Nobody plants these. Poison hemlock, water hemlock, giant hogweed, nightshade, ragwort, dock, and American mistletoe arrive on their own, usually along fence lines and in neglected corners.

Treat this group as a removal list, not a planting decision. Walk fence lines and the shaded back corners of the yard each spring, remove these before they seed, and wear gloves: giant hogweed and cow parsnip cause burns on human skin in sunlight, separate from any risk to pets.
