American false hellebore is a tall, dramatic perennial with large pleated leaves and towering spikes of small greenish flowers in summer. This moisture-loving plant thrives in shaded areas and creates bold architectural presence in the garden. All parts of the plant are highly toxic if ingested.

In an HOA neighborhood

American False Hellebore takes more care to keep looking intentional in a front yard. Maintenance level: high. Consider it for backyard or mid-zone beds rather than the street edge.

Works well in: backyard only.

  • Extremely toxic to humans and pets
  • Very tall growth may appear wild or uncontrolled
  • Requires consistently moist conditions that may look overwatered

Wildlife value

The flowers attract beetles and flies during the summer blooming period. However, most wildlife avoid this plant due to its toxic properties.

Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
