False buffalograss is a low-growing native grass that forms small, dense tufts. This drought-tolerant perennial stays compact at under a foot tall and produces tiny flowers during summer months.

In an HOA neighborhood

False Buffalo-Grass takes more care to keep looking intentional in a front yard. Maintenance level: low. Consider it for backyard or mid-zone beds rather than the street edge.

Works well in: backyard only.

  • Very small stature may appear patchy
  • Tufted growth habit looks informal
  • Limited visual impact in maintained landscapes

Wildlife value

This grass provides habitat and food for small wildlife and ground-dwelling insects. Its seeds offer food for small birds and rodents.

Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
