Goat's-beard is a large, showy perennial that produces dramatic white, feathery flower plumes in early summer. This native plant forms an impressive clump with compound leaves and can serve as a striking focal point in shaded gardens. It dies back completely in winter but returns reliably each spring.

In an HOA neighborhood

Goat's-beard is an HOA-friendly choice. Maintenance level: low. Tidiness: 4 out of 5.

Works well in: front yard, foundation, street edge, mid zone.

  • Very large mature size may overwhelm small spaces
  • Completely dormant in winter

Wildlife value

The showy white blooms attract bees and beetles during the June-July flowering period. The large size and abundant flowers make it a valuable nectar source for pollinators in shaded areas where fewer flowering options exist.

Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
