Green amaranth is a fast-growing annual herb that produces dense, upright flower spikes from summer through early fall. This native plant can reach up to 5 feet tall with a bushy, somewhat coarse appearance and thrives in sunny locations with moderate water.

In an HOA neighborhood

Green Amaranth takes more care to keep looking intentional in a front yard. Maintenance level: low. Consider it for backyard or mid-zone beds rather than the street edge.

Works well in: backyard only.

  • Strongly resembles common weeds
  • Can grow quite tall and rangy
  • May self-seed aggressively

Wildlife value

The long-blooming flower spikes attract bees and beetles throughout the summer months. Seeds provide food for birds and small wildlife in fall.

Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
