Hollow joe-pyeweed is a tall native perennial that produces clusters of pinkish-purple flowers from July through September. This robust plant can reach 5 to 15 feet in height and spreads 2 to 4 feet wide, making it best suited for larger garden spaces. It thrives in full sun with average moisture and dies back completely in winter.

In an HOA neighborhood

Hollow Joe-pyeweed takes more care to keep looking intentional in a front yard. Maintenance level: low. Consider it for backyard or mid-zone beds rather than the street edge.

Works well in: backyard only.

  • Extremely tall height appears wild and unmanicured
  • Spreads aggressively to form large colonies
  • Dormant winter appearance looks very rough

Wildlife value

Host plant for eastern tiger swallowtail, red admiral butterfly.

This plant is exceptional for pollinators, attracting bees, butterflies, and moths with its late-season blooms. The flowers provide crucial nectar when many other plants have finished blooming.

Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
