Works well in: backyard only.

  • Thistle name creates negative perception
  • Spiny stems may be considered hazardous
  • Can appear weedy and unkempt

Wildlife value

The purple flowers attract bees, butterflies, and beetles during summer months. Seeds provide food for goldfinches and other native birds.

Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
