Red pine is a tall, straight-trunked evergreen tree with distinctive reddish-brown bark and long, dark green needles in pairs. It develops a classic conical shape when young, maturing into a more oval crown with age. This hardy native thrives in full sun and tolerates poor soils and drought conditions once established.

In an HOA neighborhood

Red Pine is an HOA-friendly choice. Maintenance level: low. Tidiness: 4 out of 5.

Works well in: front yard, street edge, mid zone.

  • Very large mature size may not suit smaller properties
  • Needle drop creates maintenance needs

Wildlife value

Red pine provides nesting sites for birds and shelter for various wildlife species. The seeds are eaten by squirrels, chipmunks, and birds like nuthatches and woodpeckers.

Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
