Sweet brome is a native bunch grass that forms clumps 12-48 inches tall with an upright, fountain-like growth habit. It produces attractive seed heads from May through July and tolerates drought well once established. This perennial grass works well in naturalized areas and mixed plantings.
In an HOA neighborhood
Sweet Brome takes more care to keep looking intentional in a front yard. Maintenance level: low. Consider it for backyard or mid-zone beds rather than the street edge.
Works well in: backyard only.
- Tall height may appear unkempt to HOAs
- Seed heads can look weedy to conventional tastes
- Winter dormancy creates brown appearance for months
Wildlife value
The flowers attract bees and other pollinators during its spring and summer bloom period. Seeds provide food for birds and small wildlife.
Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
