Annual wild buckwheat forms bushy clumps with small white to pink flower clusters from summer into fall. This drought-tolerant annual readily self-seeds and provides long-lasting blooms in sunny, well-drained locations.

In an HOA neighborhood

Annual Wild Buckwheat takes more care to keep looking intentional in a front yard. Maintenance level: low. Consider it for backyard or mid-zone beds rather than the street edge.

Works well in: backyard only.

  • Annual nature creates inconsistent appearance
  • Can look weedy with small scattered flowers
  • Self-seeding may appear uncontrolled

Wildlife value

The abundant small flowers attract native bees and butterflies throughout the growing season. Seeds provide food for birds in late fall.

Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
