Ostrich fern is a tall, graceful native fern that forms distinctive vase-shaped clumps of bright green fronds. It thrives in moist, shaded areas and spreads slowly by underground rhizomes to create natural colonies. The fronds die back completely in winter, leaving behind distinctive brown fertile fronds that persist through the cold months.

In an HOA neighborhood

Fiddlehead Fern is an HOA-friendly choice. Maintenance level: low. Tidiness: 4 out of 5.

Works well in: foundation, mid zone, backyard only.

  • Dies back completely in winter leaving bare ground
  • Can spread beyond intended boundaries over time

Wildlife value

This fern provides shelter and nesting material for small wildlife and birds. The dense fronds offer cover for ground-dwelling creatures and the plant supports various insects that feed on decomposing fern matter.

Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
