Narrow small-reed is a tall, slender native grass that forms upright clumps with fine-textured foliage. It produces delicate flower plumes in summer and provides graceful movement in the landscape. This cool-season grass tolerates wet conditions better than many native grasses.

In an HOA neighborhood

Narrow Small-reed is an HOA-friendly choice. Maintenance level: low. Tidiness: 3 out of 5.

Works well in: mid zone, backyard only.

  • Can look sparse or weedy when dormant
  • May be too tall for some front yard standards
  • Requires understanding of ornamental grass growth cycles

Wildlife value

The summer flowers attract bees and flies for pollination. Seeds provide food for birds and small mammals in fall and winter.

Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
