Azure blue sage is a tall prairie perennial that produces spikes of brilliant sky-blue flowers from midsummer through fall. This drought-tolerant native forms upright clumps and can self-seed in favorable conditions, making it excellent for naturalized areas.

In an HOA neighborhood

Azure Blue Sage is an HOA-friendly choice in the right placement. Maintenance level: moderate. Tidiness: 2 out of 5.

Works well in: mid zone, backyard only.

  • Can look weedy when dormant
  • May self-seed aggressively
  • Requires annual cutting back

Wildlife value

The tubular blue flowers are magnets for bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds throughout the long blooming season. Seeds provide food for birds in late fall and winter.

Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
