Longleaf plantain is a small annual wildflower with narrow leaves and tiny spikes of flowers that bloom from May through July. This low-growing native thrives in sunny, dry conditions and maintains a compact form throughout the growing season.

In an HOA neighborhood

Longleaf Plantain takes more care to keep looking intentional in a front yard. Maintenance level: low. Consider it for backyard or mid-zone beds rather than the street edge.

Works well in: backyard only.

  • Commonly perceived as a weed due to plantain family reputation
  • Annual lifecycle creates seasonal gaps
  • Very small size may appear unkempt in formal settings

Wildlife value

While specific pollinator data is limited, plantains typically support small beneficial insects and provide seeds for birds.

Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
