Swamp thistle is a tall native perennial that produces clusters of pink to purple flowers from summer through early fall. Despite its common name, it's not aggressive like non-native thistles and provides excellent wildlife value in naturalized settings.

In an HOA neighborhood

Dunce-nettle takes more care to keep looking intentional in a front yard. Maintenance level: low. Consider it for backyard or mid-zone beds rather than the street edge.

Works well in: backyard only.

  • Thistle appearance triggers negative associations
  • Can reach 5 feet tall
  • Dies back completely in winter leaving bare stems

Wildlife value

The flowers are magnets for native bees, butterflies, and other pollinators during late summer blooms. Seeds provide food for goldfinches and other birds in fall.

Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
