Dwarf spike-rush is a tiny grass-like perennial that forms dense, low carpets in wet areas. It stays extremely short at 2-6 inches tall and produces small spike-like flowers from summer through early fall.

In an HOA neighborhood

Dwarf Spike-rush takes more care to keep looking intentional in a front yard. Maintenance level: high. Consider it for backyard or mid-zone beds rather than the street edge.

Works well in: backyard only.

  • Requires consistently wet soil conditions
  • Can appear sparse or patchy in typical landscapes
  • May look like weedy grass to uninformed observers

Wildlife value

This plant provides habitat for wetland insects and small wildlife, though it has limited appeal to most pollinators due to its wind-pollinated nature.

Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
