Rue-anemone is a delicate woodland wildflower that produces small white or pink flowers in spring before going dormant in summer. This low-growing native perennial thrives in shaded areas and forms small colonies over time through underground tubers.

In an HOA neighborhood

Rue-anemone takes more care to keep looking intentional in a front yard. Maintenance level: low. Consider it for backyard or mid-zone beds rather than the street edge.

Works well in: backyard only.

  • Goes completely dormant by mid-summer leaving bare spots
  • Very small and can appear sparse or weedy
  • Woodland wildflower appearance may look unintentional

Wildlife value

The spring flowers provide nectar for early-season bees and beetles when few other blooms are available. As a native ephemeral, it supports the woodland ecosystem during its brief growing season.

Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
