Flat-stem spike-rush is a low-growing native sedge that forms small clumps with distinctive flattened stems. This moisture-loving perennial produces small, inconspicuous flower spikes from late spring through summer and thrives in consistently wet conditions.

In an HOA neighborhood

Flat-stem Spike-rush takes more care to keep looking intentional in a front yard. Maintenance level: high. Consider it for backyard or mid-zone beds rather than the street edge.

Works well in: backyard only.

  • Requires consistently wet conditions that may create drainage issues
  • Very informal grass-like appearance may look weedy
  • Small size and unremarkable appearance don't provide ornamental impact

Wildlife value

This sedge provides nesting material and cover for small birds and supports various insects, though it is not a significant pollinator plant.

Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
