Gray's sedge is a clump-forming native grass-like plant with distinctive star-shaped seed heads that appear in summer. This moisture-loving perennial grows in attractive tufts and provides excellent texture in shaded garden areas. The unusual spiky seed clusters make it a conversation piece in the landscape.

In an HOA neighborhood

Gray's Sedge takes more care to keep looking intentional in a front yard. Maintenance level: low. Consider it for backyard or mid-zone beds rather than the street edge.

Works well in: backyard only.

  • Unusual spiky seed heads may appear weedy to neighbors
  • Goes dormant in winter leaving brown stubble
  • Grass-like appearance may be mistaken for unmaintained turf

Wildlife value

The seeds provide food for songbirds and waterfowl. As a sedge, it offers nesting material and cover for small wildlife.

Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
