Rattlebox is a tall annual wildflower that produces bright yellow pea-like flowers from summer through fall. This upright plant grows quickly and self-seeds readily, making it better suited for naturalized areas than formal landscapes.

In an HOA neighborhood

Rattlebox takes more care to keep looking intentional in a front yard. Maintenance level: low. Consider it for backyard or mid-zone beds rather than the street edge.

Works well in: backyard only.

  • Plant contains toxic alkaloids that may concern HOAs
  • Can appear weedy or wild in formal landscapes
  • May self-seed aggressively

Wildlife value

The abundant yellow blooms attract bees and butterflies throughout the long flowering season. However, all parts of this plant are toxic to humans and livestock.

Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
