River horsetail is a unique wetland perennial with segmented, bamboo-like stems that create an architectural appearance. This ancient plant thrives in consistently moist to wet soils and partial shade conditions. It produces spore-bearing cones rather than flowers and can spread via underground rhizomes.

In an HOA neighborhood

River Horsetail takes more care to keep looking intentional in a front yard. Maintenance level: high. Consider it for backyard or mid-zone beds rather than the street edge.

Works well in: backyard only.

  • Unusual appearance may seem unkempt to traditional gardeners
  • Requires consistently wet conditions difficult to maintain
  • Can spread aggressively via rhizomes

Wildlife value

As a spore-producing plant, river horsetail does not attract typical pollinators but provides habitat structure for wetland wildlife and aquatic insects.

Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
