American blue-eyed-grass forms neat, grass-like clumps with delicate blue flowers that bloom in late spring and early summer. Despite its name, it's actually a member of the iris family and creates an orderly, low-maintenance groundcover. The small star-shaped flowers add subtle color without being overwhelming.

In an HOA neighborhood

American Blue-eyed-grass is an HOA-friendly choice. Maintenance level: low. Tidiness: 4 out of 5.

Works well in: front yard, foundation, street edge, mid zone.

Wildlife value

The flowers attract small native bees and butterflies during its May-June bloom period. Its compact size makes it a good pollinator plant for smaller garden spaces.

Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
