Cinnamon fern is a large, graceful native fern that forms attractive clumps in moist, shaded areas. It gets its name from the cinnamon-colored fertile fronds that emerge in spring, followed by tall green sterile fronds that create a lush backdrop through summer.

In an HOA neighborhood

Cinnamon Fern is an HOA-friendly choice. Maintenance level: low. Tidiness: 4 out of 5.

Works well in: front yard, foundation, mid zone.

  • Dies back completely in winter leaving bare spots

Wildlife value

This fern provides shelter and nesting material for small wildlife and birds. While it doesn't attract pollinators directly, it supports the broader ecosystem by creating habitat in shaded woodland gardens.

Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
