Prairie bundleflower is a native perennial with feathery, compound leaves and small, white globe-shaped flower clusters. This drought-tolerant plant grows in an upright, somewhat open form and goes dormant in winter, leaving attractive seed pods that persist into fall.

In an HOA neighborhood

Illinois Bundleflower takes more care to keep looking intentional in a front yard. Maintenance level: low. Consider it for backyard or mid-zone beds rather than the street edge.

Works well in: backyard only.

  • Looks weedy and informal when not in bloom
  • Open growth habit appears unkempt
  • Seed pods may be seen as messy by neighbors

Wildlife value

The flowers attract native bees and beetles during summer blooms. Seeds provide food for birds, and the plant serves as a host for some native butterfly larvae.

Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
