European bur-reed is an aquatic perennial that grows in shallow water or consistently wet soil. It produces narrow, grass-like leaves and distinctive spiky seed heads during summer blooms. This plant requires constant moisture and is best suited for water gardens or bog areas.

In an HOA neighborhood

European Bur-reed takes more care to keep looking intentional in a front yard. Maintenance level: high. Consider it for backyard or mid-zone beds rather than the street edge.

Works well in: backyard only.

  • Requires specialized water garden conditions
  • Looks unkempt without consistent wetland management
  • Non-native species may be viewed unfavorably

Wildlife value

Provides habitat for waterfowl and aquatic insects. Seeds are eaten by ducks and other water birds.

Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
