Sea club-rush is a tall wetland sedge that forms dense clumps in consistently moist to wet soils. It produces distinctive brown, club-like flower clusters in summer and thrives in full sun bog gardens or rain gardens. This plant requires constant moisture and will struggle in typical landscape conditions.

In an HOA neighborhood

Sea Club-rush takes more care to keep looking intentional in a front yard. Maintenance level: moderate. Consider it for backyard or mid-zone beds rather than the street edge.

Works well in: backyard only.

  • Appears very wild and marsh-like
  • Requires wet conditions uncommon in typical landscaping
  • Can spread aggressively in suitable conditions

Wildlife value

The seeds provide food for waterfowl and wetland birds, while the dense growth offers nesting habitat for marsh birds.

Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
