Lacegrass is a delicate native grass that forms small clumps with fine, thread-like leaves. It produces airy, cloud-like seed heads from summer through early fall that give it an ethereal appearance in the landscape.

In an HOA neighborhood

Lace Grass takes more care to keep looking intentional in a front yard. Maintenance level: low. Consider it for backyard or mid-zone beds rather than the street edge.

Works well in: backyard only.

  • Very fine texture can appear weedy or unkempt
  • Seed heads may look messy to traditional landscaping preferences
  • Small size makes it less visually impactful in formal settings

Wildlife value

The seeds provide food for various songbirds and small mammals. As a native grass, it also supports native insects and contributes to local ecosystem health.

Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
