Fimbristylis autumnalis is a small annual sedge that forms compact clumps of narrow, grass-like foliage. It produces inconspicuous brownish flower clusters from late summer through fall and thrives in sunny, dry conditions. This diminutive plant works well as a textural accent in rock gardens or naturalized areas.

In an HOA neighborhood

Puerto Rico Fimbristylis takes more care to keep looking intentional in a front yard. Maintenance level: low. Consider it for backyard or mid-zone beds rather than the street edge.

Works well in: backyard only.

  • Very small size makes it appear sparse in formal settings
  • Annual lifecycle creates bare spots when plants die back
  • Grass-like appearance may be mistaken for weeds

Wildlife value

This sedge provides seeds for small birds and ground-foraging wildlife in fall and winter. Its small stature and brief growing season offer limited but valuable late-season resources.

Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
