Red fescue is a fine-textured, clumping grass that forms dense, low-maintenance turf or groundcover. This cool-season grass stays green through winter and tolerates drought well once established. It works well as an alternative to traditional lawn grass in areas with poor soil or low water availability.

In an HOA neighborhood

Red Fescue is an HOA-friendly choice. Maintenance level: low. Tidiness: 4 out of 5.

Works well in: front yard, foundation, street edge, mid zone.

Wildlife value

Red fescue provides nesting material and cover for ground-dwelling birds and small wildlife. As a wind-pollinated grass, it offers minimal direct benefit to bees and butterflies but supports the broader ecosystem food web.

Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
