Small bedstraw is a delicate native perennial that forms low mats of fine, wiry stems with tiny leaves arranged in whorls. It produces clusters of small white flowers during summer months and thrives in partially shaded areas with consistent moisture. This subtle groundcover works well as an understory plant in naturalized settings.

In an HOA neighborhood

Small Bedstraw takes more care to keep looking intentional in a front yard. Maintenance level: low. Consider it for backyard or mid-zone beds rather than the street edge.

Works well in: backyard only.

  • Very fine texture can appear weedy or unkempt
  • Dies back completely in winter leaving bare patches
  • May spread unpredictably and look scraggly

Wildlife value

The small white flowers attract various pollinators including native bees, flies, and beetles during the summer blooming period. Its low growth habit provides shelter for small beneficial insects.

Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
