Winter bentgrass is a fine-textured native grass that forms loose clumps with delicate, airy flower heads. It grows moderately tall and provides a soft, natural texture in partial sun locations with average moisture.

In an HOA neighborhood

Winter Bentgrass takes more care to keep looking intentional in a front yard. Maintenance level: low. Consider it for backyard or mid-zone beds rather than the street edge.

Works well in: backyard only.

  • Loose, informal growth habit may appear unkempt
  • Can look weedy or wild compared to traditional landscaping
  • May go dormant and brown in winter

Wildlife value

The grass flowers attract bees during summer months. As a native grass, it also provides habitat and food sources for various small wildlife.

Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
