Toad rush is a small, delicate annual grass-like plant that grows in low tufts with thin, thread-like leaves. It produces tiny, inconspicuous greenish-brown flowers from late spring through fall and thrives in moist, partially shaded areas.

In an HOA neighborhood

Toad Rush takes more care to keep looking intentional in a front yard. Maintenance level: low. Consider it for backyard or mid-zone beds rather than the street edge.

Works well in: backyard only.

  • Very weedy appearance year-round
  • Dies back completely as annual
  • Extremely small and sparse growth habit

Wildlife value

This plant provides seeds for small birds and serves as habitat for various insects, though it is not a significant pollinator plant due to its wind-pollinated flowers.

Native range data from the USDA PLANTS Database and regional native plant society lists. Pollinator and host plant associations compiled from GBIF, iNaturalist, and published ecological literature.
